There’s A Upgrade A Comin’! (UPDATE)

I don’t know why, but I get fussy about what I run my BBSes on. I mean I know it’s stupid, but hey, it’s me and it drives me nuts if I don’t have the setup I want. So, I went and got a new upgrade for the BBS. Continue reading There’s A Upgrade A Comin’! (UPDATE)

W I D E S C R E E N B B S = 137 x 32 … It’s Coming

While perusing some groups I discovered that SyncTerm supports 132×37 screens and that Mystic has the capability to utilize that scren size in it’s editor. So basically..  W I D E S C R E E N  B B S! Continue reading W I D E S C R E E N B B S = 137 x 32 … It’s Coming

Shhhh… SSH is Active

Cryptlib is installed and now SSH is available to connect to the BBS. This is something that I have wanted to offer on my BBSes ever since I got back into it and revived Amiga-Z back in the early 2000s. But CNet didn’t have a library capable of doing it effectively. But I Should I put up another Amiga based BBS, you bet I will figure out a way. But hey, don’t just rely on SSH for protecting your privacy. Why not use a VPN too?

In the last couple years, VPNs have gotten very popular and I use one myself. I tried the free ones, but honestly, the paid ones are much better and there is no throttling like many of the free ones do. Also from a security standpoint it can only add to your privacy. Plus, a lot of the VPNs like CyberGhost, who I use, offer a great starting price. I paid $99 for 3 years. $33 a year is NOT bad at all. And I gotta say I have been pretty pleased.

HAM SEARCH for Mystic v.1 ALPHA

A screenshot of HAM SEARCH v.1 ALPHA for Mystic BBS.

The first alpha version of HAM SERACH, a Python based script for Bulletin Board Systems using the Mystic BBS is now being tested on Radio Freqs & Geeks BBS.

It searches the publicly available FCC database for Amateur Radio licenses, to retrieve info for Amateur Radio stations, to send QSL cards. It currently only supports U.S. based callsigns.

To access it, you must be a user of the BBS and validated (Security lvl 20 or higher.), and can access it with the command HAMSEARCH from the GO menu.

Something To Look Forward To… Ham Radio Callsign Search

So recently, I wanted to start making some changes to the BBS and one of those was, I wanted to be able to do an FCC callsign lookup. I didn’t see any doors I could use, but then again, I wasn’t looking too hard. But I decided to do some research and here’s some info I discovered. Paging The SysOp

Updated with a Windows option! See end of article!

Now, running a BBS is old fashioned in and of itself, but calling the SysOp for chat if he’s around is something else. Just a simple keyboard to keyboard chat on the BBS is still cool in my opinion and if I’m around and the user has a question and wants to chat, well then, if I can accomodate it, I will! But there is one issue with Mystic BBS on Linux. The Page SysOp menu item doesn’t work. At all. So I did a little work around…  Continue reading Paging The SysOp
